To major in sociology a student must take courses in social thought, research methods and appropriate substantive material. Graduates of the program are eligible to enter graduate or law school as well as take positions in a wide variety of governmental and private organizations.

The Bachelor of Science in Sociology requires 120 semester hours to complete. In addition to 36 hours of general education requirements, students must meet all University requirements and grades of “C” or above in all sociology courses. A minimum of 30 semester hours in sociology are required of all majors.  In addition, 9 hours of prerequisite courses are required. SYG 2000  - Introduction to Sociology; SYG 2010  - Social Problems; and SYG 2006  - Professional Development are the prerequisite courses. SYG 2006  is not required for students who enter the major with 60 or more hours or an AA degree.  

The required core courses are SYA 3010  - Sociological Theory;SYA 3300  - Research Methods; SYA 3400  - Social Statistics; SYA 4930  - Senior Seminar in Sociology; and SYD 4730  - Sociology of the Black Experience. It is expected that at least 21 hours of upper-division sociology courses be taken at Florida A&M University. Sociology majors are expected have a minimum of 48 hours of upper-division courses. No more than six (6) credit hours of anthropology courses may be applied toward the sociology major.

Internships are available for students to acquire experience in their chosen professional area.
The internship is optional, but students are strongly encouraged to arrange their schedules so that they can complete an internship before they graduate.

A minor is required for sociology majors. The minor requires eighteen (18) credit hours of course work in an approved field. The curriculum for the minor follows the requirements
specified by the minor field. A grade below a “C” will not be accepted for credit toward the minor.
