The School of Allied Health Sciences offers a course of study that leads to the degree Bachelor of Science health science: pre-occupational therapy concentration. The health science curriculum is designed to produce graduates capable of demonstrating those characteristics identified as desirable by employees of tomorrow’s health care professionals. The student majoring in health science graduates with a general degree that will allow that graduate to work in health care settings, community programs or agencies, or continue to a graduate program.

Currently, the health science major includes all prerequisite courses required for entry into the occupational therapy graduate program. Therefore, it is recommended that students interested in majoring in occupational therapy should major in health science with a concentration in pre-occupational therapy at the undergraduate level. Students who wish to apply to the occupational therapy graduate program will major in health science pre-occupational Therapy concentration (see below). Those who wish to pursue physical therapy will major in health science pre-physical therapy concentration (see Division of Physical Therapy for complete curriculum). The health science degree provides the basis for students to pursue graduate education in other health care, community, and science-oriented arenas. The health science degree is suitable for students wishing to pursue and graduate with general health -related knowledge to be used as the basis for work in the health-care setting. Additionally, students who already have an associate of arts (AA) degree who wish to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree and return to work in a related health arena would benefit from the health science degree. The degree is useful for lower division pre-professional students who completed the necessary prerequisite courses for a professional program but were not accepted into that program. With the health science degree, such students are still able to graduate in a health-related area.
