Liberal Arts Requirements (30 semester hours)

Recognizing the need for its students to receive a broad, well-rounded education, the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication has developed a list of liberal arts courses required of all majors. These include principles of economics; logic; sociology; psychology; art appreciation; and national, state, and local government. The school also requires majors to take courses to improve oral and written communication. These courses are essential for students preparing for careers in mass media.

Capstone Projects

The semester before graduation, students are required to present a Capstone Project to a panel of professors and media professionals. The project includes a portfolio of the students’ work accumulated during their years in the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication. Majors must pass the capstone project requirements to graduate. Students must register in Colloquium during their final semester to get credit for the Capstone Project. Summer graduates must register for these courses in the spring because they are not offered during the summer sessions.

Transfer Credit

The School of Journalism & Graphic Communication may accept a maximum of six hours of journalism credit from non-accredited journalism/mass communication programs, and up to 12 hours from accredited programs. The Dean makes the decision regarding the actual number of transfer hours.

Scholarships

The School of Journalism & Graphic Communication awards scholarships to outstanding high school graduates, and currently enrolled students. Furthermore, merit scholarships are awarded through the University Scholarship Program Office. The office supports outstanding students as a means to enhance their academic, professional, and personal development.

Black Television News Channel

The School of Journalism & Graphic Communication is home to the Black Television News Channel (BTNC), a new enterprise poised to offer 24-hour multi-platform news content to a global audience. The network represents a unique opportunity to expose journalism, public relations and graphic communication students to multimedia practitioners and the inner workings of a full-scale network news organization.

Financial Assistance Program

All students are strongly encouraged to apply for federal and/or state financial aid through the FAMU Office of Student Financial Aid. The School of Journalism & Graphic design also administers a constantly growing scholarship endowment for students in journalism and graphic design. The nearly half million-dollar endowment provides several scholarships annually from interest earnings.

Minimum criteria for scholarships are 1100 SAT or 26 ACT scores and at least a 3.4 grade average. Scholarship criteria are usually adjusted annually. Scholarship applicants must have been admitted to FAMU and must have applied for other financial aid to be considered. Applicants must present portfolios of work and show proof of application for scholarships.

Applications for these scholarships are available through the university’s new scholarship portal.
