School of Architecture and Engineering Technology

The School of Architecture & Engineering Technology (SA+ET) is a professional school committed to preparing its graduates for excellence in the practice of architecture, construction, and electronics. The SA+ET consist of two divisions. The Division of Architecture offers the Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies, the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accredited Bachelor of Architecture, the NAAB accredited Master of Architecture and the Master of Science in Architecture. The Division of Engineering Technology offers the Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc., (ABET) accredited Construction Engineering Technology and the ABET accredited Electronic Engineering Technology degree. All students who wish to become creative and active leaders in either discipline are welcomed to the School’s programs. Minors in Architecture, Engineering Technology (general), Construction Engineering Technology, and Electronic Engineering Technology also are offered through the SA+ET.


Admission to all programs is by formal application to the university. All applications are evaluated individually on the basis of the applicant’s academic achievements. Additional consideration may be given for work experience in the field, evidenced in a portfolio, and written and oral communication skills.


The faculty are a distinguished group of people with an exceptional range of interests and talents. In addition to teaching, faculty members engage in research and professional development in energy conservation, structural systems, environmental education, low-cost housing, building use programming, architectural communications, and computer-aided design. The low faculty-to-student ratio allows close student contact with the faculty and personal academic advisement.


Students in the School of Architecture and Engineering Technology form a highly diverse group of individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and knowledge. Coming from all over the world, some students enter the SA+ET as high school graduates; others come as transfer students, second-degree candidates or as graduate students. Students are encouraged to become involved in the school’s professional organizations, professional fraternities, service organizations and honor societies. Student participation in these organizations provides a valuable service to the school as well as an important leadership-learning experience for members. The SA+ET Dean’s Council includes student representatives from both divisions and every level of the program. The council works closely with the dean on all matters of interest to students.

Building and Equipment

The Division of Engineering Technology is housed in the Benjamin Banneker complex. The Division of Architecture is housed in the Walter Smith Architecture building. The buildings offer a complete range of resources, sophisticated laboratories for student use, exhibition space for national and international shows and student displays, and indoor and outdoor areas for student gatherings. The computer laboratories are freely accessible to all students and science and technology laboratories are used for instruction and research in environmental controls, electronics and structures. Equipment is available for energy analysis and studies of the climate and the physical environment. A model-building and construction laboratory is equipped for presentation modeling, three-dimensional space analysis, and experimental studies.


The Institute for Building Sciences (IBS) coordinates the research, service, and continuing education activities of the SA+ET. Through the institute, faculty and students have conducted research and service projects for state and federal government agencies, non-profit foundations and organizations, and industry. Many IBS projects have included international collaborations and funding. Projects have ranged from statistical surveys, analytical studies, and comparative investigations to laboratory-intensive evaluations of building materials and construction methods and Internet-based information dissemination systems. In addition, IBS has conducted numerous symposia, workshops, seminars, and conferences for design professionals, contractors, developers, manufacturers, public officials, and others involved in the design, construction, and management of buildings.

Special Programs and Events

SA+ET students’ education is greatly strengthened by visiting critics and lecturers. Therefore, distinguished guests are invited to give a broad range of views. In addition to lecturing, visitors are asked to spend additional time with students discussing potential career opportunities. A guest lecture series is offered each semester and elective courses are regularly offered. The school also realizes special opportunities to work with many state and federal agencies and to be active in helping to establish governmental policies affecting education. To enhance the curriculum, students have the opportunity to travel around the United States, the Caribbean, Central America, and Europe.

Financial Aid

A variety of financial aid sources are available to students, including federal and state loans, grants, and scholarships. Financial aid, in the manner of student loans, is not awarded by the SA+ET. Application must be made to Florida A&M University. Students are encouraged to file financial aid forms as early as possible prior to the scheduled deadlines. School of Architecture & Engineering Technology Graduate Programs

The SA+ET Division of Architecture offers two degree programs at the graduate level to accommodate students from different backgrounds who may have various educational and career goals. These degree programs are:

  1. The Master of Architecture (M.Arch., professionally accredited program)
  2. The Master of Science in Architecture (M.S.Arch.)

Types of Applicants:

Applicants to the graduate programs are generally of two types:

  1. Students who have completed the equivalent of our Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies.
  2. Students who have a prior degree in a field other than architecture.

Progress and Retention Requirements

All students seeking admission to a graduate program in the School of Architecture are required to meet all of the provisions outlined in the university Catalog for satisfactory progress and retention as determined by the School of Graduate Studies and Research. The requirements for satisfactory progress for such students are different from the general requirements for progress and retention for students admitted and enrolled in undergraduate degree programs.

Students admitted to graduate programs in the School of Architecture & Engineering Technology who fail to maintain the required conditions for progress and retention could face termination of their graduate student status. A grade in a graduate-level course of “C” or below must be retaken. Such retakes follow different grade forgiveness policies from those that apply to undergraduate students’ grades.
