Sport Management - Master of Science
The Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation offers professional courses leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Health, Physical Education/Fitness, a new degree effective Fall Semester 2014. This degree offers two track options: The student can major in Physical Education Teacher Certification with endorsements in health education and driver and safety education or major in Health, Leisure and Fitness Studies (HLFS) with concentrations in aquatics, dance, exercise science and coaching and/or health promotion. The Physical Education Teacher Education curriculum is designed to prepare students for certification and employment in the K-12 teaching and coaching profession. The Health, Leisure and Fitness Studies major is designed to prepare students for entry level professional employment in community-based recreation, coaching and fitness enterprises, health promotion in business and industrial settings and related fields of hospitality, tourism, sport management, and graduate study in related fields
The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation offers the Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Sport Management. The FAMU Sport Management faculty is committed to offering students skills and knowledge necessary to understand management in sport-related settings. At the completion of the program, students will have the necessary skill set to be practitioners in the sport industry. The Sport Management program offers interactive, educational training that is necessary for individuals seeking careers in the sport industry - an industry that has evolved into an integral part of today’s culture. The operation of sport programs have become more sophisticated and complex, and must be managed by equally savvy professionals well versed in the intricacies of sport activities. Thus, the program emphasizes a variety of managerial, administrative, socio-cultural, and communication skills necessary for success in a multifaceted sport industry.
Students are admitted to the program during summer, fall and spring semesters. Graduate students in the Sport Management program must maintain a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) during matriculation and graduation from the program. Students are strongly encouraged to be involved in professional development through participation in professional and academic opportunities at the local, state, regional, national, and/or international levels in order to network and gain experience in the field.
Admissions Requirements
Students seeking admission to the Sport Management program must meet the following minimum criteria prior to admission:
- Possession of an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited institution of higher education
- Must have earned a 3.0 GPA during the last 60 semester credit hours in the undergraduate program and have a Graduate Record Examination “GRE” score on record. Test results must be within the last five years.
- Three professional letters of reference (i.e. from former professors or employers) addressing the applicant’s ability to succeed in a graduate program - ALL LETERS MUST BE ON COMPANY/ORGANIZATION LETTERHEAD.
- A personal statement describing the applicant’s desire to pursue a degree in Sport Management and career goal(s) in the sport industry

Individuals may obtain an application from FAMU Graduate Studies and Research or obtain it online from the Web-site (https://www.applyweb.com/famug/).
Potential graduate students must submit the completed application - to Graduate Studies and Research along with an official copy of the GRE scores and official transcript(s) from all previously attended colleges/universities.
All other supporting documentation should also be sent to Graduate Studies and Research Office and the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) at FAMU.
AN APPLICATION SHOULD BE SUBMITTED TO GRADUATE STUDIES AND RESEARCH BEFORE SENDING ANY MATERIALS TO THE HPER DEPARTMENT.

Funding
While graduate assistantships are the ideal source of funding in graduate school, financial resources are limited. Applicants may apply for funding through the College of Education. Applications may be picked up in person from either the College of Education or from the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. Individuals must be a fully, regularly admitted to receive this funding. Applicants are encouraged to visit the Graduate Studies and Research Website to search for funding options. Also, one may seek financial support through graduate assistantship positions in administrative offices around the university such as residence halls, the student recreation center, campus recreation, athletics, and other service offices
