Biological Systems Engineering (BSE), Natural Resources Conservation Engineering Option, BS


Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) integrates engineering and the agricultural, biological, and chemical sciences. The Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Systems Engineering has two options:

  1. Bioprocessing and Food Engineering
  2. Natural Resources Conservation Engineering

The program provides the students with a strong background in engineering fundamentals by incorporating a series of general engineering courses offered through the College of Engineering. It then provides a professional focus by combining courses in biochemical, food and natural resources engineering. Within the curriculum, students focus on solving current problems related to natural resource management and conservation as well as biological and agricultural production and processes. Graduates of the program are prepared for graduate studies in science and engineering, professional studies and/or for work as engineers in industry and government, solving complex engineering problems and designing products and processes.

The 128 semester hour BSE program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012, telephone: (410) 347-7700. The program is designed to prepare students for graduate study in STEM fields, including health fields or for a career in agricultural engineering, biotechnology, environmental engineering, process engineering and other related engineering. Graduates primarily find employment in private industry, consulting, government (including local, state, and federal government agencies such as USDA and EPA).
