Environmental Science, MS


The M.S. degree program offers students the opportunity to specialize in Environmental Restoration and Waste Management, Radiation Protection, Environmental Biotechnology, Marine and Estuarine Environments, and Environmental Policy and Management. Graduates of FAMU and other SUS undergraduate programs in natural sciences, pharmacy, economics, mathematics, engineering, engineering technology, or computer science are seen to be the principal clientele for the program. Students enrolled in the School of the Environment M.S. Degree program are required to complete a thesis.

Admission into the M.S. degree program requires that students hold a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) in the last 60 semester hours or the last 90 quarter hours of undergraduate education or have a combined score of 300 on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or an advanced degree in a related area of study, a prospective research advisor and financial support. Admission to the School of the Environment M.S. degree program maybe subject to space and fiscal limitations. Selection criteria include such factors as grades, test scores, educational objectives, area of study, work experience, recommendations, and personal records. All admissions shall be approved by the School of the Environment Graduate Committee, the School of the Environment dean, and the dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research.

This program requires a minimum of 36 credit hours which combine three basic components: (A) core courses (19 hrs.) that provide a fundamental understanding of environmental science, issues and policies; (B) concentration courses (minimum 12 hrs.), which enable students to establish a solid foundation in their area of interest and (C) thesis (6 hrs.).
