RN-BSN, BSN


Baccalaureate Degree: RN-BSN Program


The RN-BSN program is specifically designed for registered nurses who desire to obtain a bachelor of science degree. It offers flexible options for the educational needs of the registered nurse. The course work is structured to enhance the breadth and depth of previous education for the changing medical/health environment.

Admission Criteria


  • Official transcripts showing associate degree in nursing from an accredited institution;
  • A copy of current valid, unrestricted, unencumbered registered nurse (RN) license from the state in which the applicant is practicing. License is to be kept current during the program;
  • Official transcripts from all institutions previously attended; and
  • Completion of required 60 hours of general education and prerequisite course work with grade of “C” or above.

The required state common prerequisite courses(*) are:

All students completing the RN-BSN must complete FAMU’s general education requirements (36 credit hours), including the State of Florida. Graduates must also satisfy at least 120 credit hours to be awarded the degree. The number of hours transferred in will be based on initial review of students’ transcript and equivalencies to courses taught at FAMU.

A minimum of 30 credit hours must be completed in residence at FAMU.

*These are state common prerequisites substitutes identified in the state Common Prerequisite Manual at www.flvc.org. Other identified courses are also accepted.

  • Completion of two (2) sequential courses of foreign language in high school or sequential 8-10 semester hours at the postsecondary level, or approved alternate methods for demonstrating competence.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, for all coursework attempted.
  • Appropriate documentation of medical history, physical examination, tuberculosis test and/or chest X-ray, and influenza vaccine. A state or military certificate of immunization status documenting immunity for measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), Hepatitis B (HBV), Varicella (Var.), and diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and acellular pertussis (DTaP) or tetanus and diphtheria (Td) is required. If certification of immunization is not available, a titer is required.
  • Current American Heart Association BCLS CPR certification.
  • Admission to the university.
  • Submission of a completed School of Nursing application.

Admission to the program takes place in the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Graduation Requirements


A completion of 30 credit hours is required for the baccalaureate degree from FAMU. Students who already have an RN license must meet this requirement to be eligible for graduation with a BSN. The required courses are:

The program may be completed in 12 months.

Sixty (60) hours must be earned at a senior institution. The final 30 hours must be taken at FAMU. A student who transfers with less than 60 credits upon admission must earn nine (9) credit hours prior to graduation by attending one or more summer terms.
